Colon Health: How and Why

Want to hear an astonishing statistic? Over five pounds of your weight right now could be uneliminated waste in your colon! Wow! Maybe going on a diet isn't your solution for losing those last few pounds after all.

Our bodies are built to eliminate our wastes with great effectiveness. In perfect health, they will do so with amazing efficiency and regularity.

However, most of us don't allow our bodies to be in perfect health. Our lifestyles, environments and beliefs are based more on convenience and appearance than good health and wellness.

Have you ever had a "science experiment" growing in your fridge? You know - last month's leftover tuna casserole starts to grow a beard, and you're not sure, but you think you might have seen it move on it's own? If so, then you know how gooey, fermented and green it turns after awhile. And the stench - it's enough to stop a bus.

Can you imagine that process of rotting food happening inside your own body right now?

If the body, especially the colon, is healthy, you will not need anti-perspirants because your sweat will not reek of fermented waste. A person who doesn't need anti-perspirants actually smells quite natural and pleasing.

Interestingly, most people I know who do not need anti-perspirants are either vegetarian or over 75% raw diet.

The Problem

Despite mainstream beliefs that major diseases are random in their occurance, it is well known that the state of your colon is the primary, and some say only, factor in your susceptibility for disease. Great news - you are in control of your colon health!

What we put into our bodies, such as processed foods, "convenience" foods, and chemical additives, all contribute to less effective elimination.

Many people, women and girls especially, have been trained by the ladies of the family to be embarassed by their bodily functions because they're "unladylike". They refuse to 'go' anywhere but at home when no one else is around. Now, I'm generally a big fan of mothers' and grandmothers' wisdom, but not this time.

After years of holding in waste, these women's bodies have adjusted so that they physically can no longer have bowel movements when needed. The waste then becomes compacted, causing serious damage to the colon.

Lack of exercise, proper rest and sleep, and lack of knowledge about colon health are just a few factors among many that can contribute to problems with the body's elimination of waste.


Solutions

It's never too late to help your colon back to a state of natural health. There are several simple little adjustments to your daily routine that will make all the difference to your process of elimination.

Ideally, you should have a bowel movement every time you eat. A diet high in fiber will help accomplish this, along with drinking enough water and getting enough exercise.

Caution: Laxatives are NOT an efficient way to create colon health! Stay away from laxatives and try more natural methods instead.

Are you having trouble with elimination? Two words: warm water. Try taking a warm bath, or drink a glass of warm (not hot) water.

Many cultures have holes in the floor for squatting to eliminate. We tend to think of our toilets as advanced far beyond those primal means of eliminating, but actually it's the squatters who have one up on us. Squatting puts our bodies in the most effective position for our colon to process wastes.

Next time you're having difficulty with a bowel movement, raise your hands over your head as you sit on the toilet. This closely simulates the squatting postion and makes elimination easier.

Another tip: Don't read on the toilet! It encourages hunching over, which will compact your colon and not allow waste to move through it efficiently.

Wearing tight fitting jeans, pants or skirts all day every day can severely impede your body's ability to eliminate waste by cutting off circulation around the midsection and compressing vital organs. Wear loose clothing as much as possible.

As you awaken, don't reach for your coffee or tea just yet. About half an hour before intake of any other fluids or solids, squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water and drink it. Don't use bottled or processed lemon juice, only fresh. Lemonade doesn't count either.

•  Lemon is the only citrus fruit that isn't acidic. It creates an alkaline environment in your body and directly supports the liver.
•  Room temperature lemons yield more juice than refrigerated.
•  Since lemon juice can erode the enamel on your teeth, our dentist's hint is to rinse well with fresh water directly after drinking the diluted lemon juice. Do not brush teeth immediately afterward.

Of course, what goes into your mouth is of vital importance in proper elimination. Health begins here; you really are what you eat. Most importantly, consider the acid/alkaline balance of your current diet. Ideally you should be consuming 60% alkaline and 40% acidic foods. Imbalance either way can cause stress on your entire digestive and elimination system, causing buildup of last week's dinner to stick to your insides.

Are you someone who just won't give up your coffee? Who refuses to eat raw vegetables? Who runs to the store for a package of Rolaids for intestinal upset instead of adjusting your health habits? I just have one question for you --- how does it feel to know that last month's dinner could be rotting away inside your body as you read this?

Wouldn't you rather be healthy, have more energy, better skin, and less body odour? You can! It's all a matter of wising up to what goes into and what comes out of your body.

With understanding and willingness to make changes, small or large, you can take control of your own health.
